Though a junior member of the Finale family, Songwriter offers functionality beyond the expectations of it's modest price. A detailed list of all facilities available would go far beyond the scope of this product entry; however, as a taster, we will detail just a few of it's features.
Foremost for any music notation software is the ability to print a professional looking score, which happily is possible with Songwriter. The included software synthesiser also allows you to hear your songs, although we would disagree with the manufacturer's claim that it is of a professional standard - for that, you must look to additional software. The ability to transpose your music to any key is an absolute must have - when working with others, particularly, you can just about guarantee that sooner or later the need will arise to produce a piece quickly in another key, so the inclusion of this feature is hardly a luxury.
Adding harmonies automatically will probably appeal to some users more than others, but overall we are glad to see the inclusion of this facilty. Especially useful is the ability of the software to generate guitar and bass tablature automatically - someone you know will always be happier with tab. It's also nice that you can create drum grooves with notation automatically; groove being a relative term, of course - the beauty is that it's up to you how well the music grooves. You can, of course, add dynamics to your score, along with slurs, articulation markins, etc.
Songwriter also allows you to both import and export MIDI files, play a MIDI keyboard and see the notes appear instantly, as well as giving you the option to input notes by clicking straight onto the staff, and to alter notes by dragging them up and down.
